The Ecumenical Youth Assembly ECUMENICAL SPACES - ECUMENICAL VISIONS - CALL TO SOCIAL JUSTICE took place in Prague, Czech Republic from July 8 - 16, 2004. The idea to organise an ecumenical youth assembly occured in ENYA for the first time in 2000, when the general asssembly of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church has held. The intention was to have an ecumenical youth event in parallel with the official Church assembly another one, which would give to young people an opportunity to discusse and express their oppinion to pressing issues of today’s reality.

The first plan was to gather together young people not only from the Czechoslovak Hussite Church, but also from other churches in Czech Republic. Due to several organisational and financial reasons this idea could not come into being before 2004. But now we have decided to invite young people not only from Czech Republic, but also from other countries, mainly in the Central and Eastern Europe. We were surprised, how many applications we received. About 120 people applied from Europe and in addition about 100 from other regions.

In the assembly more than 100 young people participated from the age of 16 to 35 years. The particpants came from more than 15 countries: Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovak Republic, Ukraine, and Wales.

The assembly was an unique event in the life of ENYA in many senses. Firstly by its size. Till now ENYA was organising seminars, camps, workshops and other activities for not so great number of participants. Secondly it gathered together people from many countries, from different social and spiritual background - members of various churches (two thirds of them were Orthodox) and also non-believers, people who work as social workers but also many of those, who need their help.

All of them could openly express their opinion, to talk about their personal experience, to share their views, visions and dreams. This gathering was for many of us a source of new information about various burning issues. It has helped us to better understand the situation of other people, and it was a good school of tolerance and sensitivity.

The main aims of the Assembly was to bring forward the unique contribution of ecumenically involved young people, to continue to build ecumenical awareness of youth concerns and issues and to enable more young youth and young adults to experience the challenges and joys of the ecumenical movement.

Issues that were addressed were: mission and service, racism and discrimination, violence and economic injustices, unemployment, globalisation, trafficking of children, youth and women, marginalisation, sexual abuse, gender issues, etc, >>>>> The main challenges of being Church and being ecumenical in today's world.

The Assembly was a very important process and time for consolidation and reflection, as well as looking towards the future. Out of this, new strategies were developed which aim to improve the participation of youth and young people in Church and Society.
