The Corrymeela Community
Northern Ireland

|
Long-Term Volunteer Programme:
The Volunteer programme has been an essential part of Corrymeela's work since its beginning in 1965. Each year 12 persons to come, live and work at our Centre in Ballycastle, on the beautiful North Antrim Coast. The committment is for one year, starting in September with two six month volunteer staff being added in March. Young adults aged between 18 and 30 years of age. Volunteer staff help with all aspects of the running of the Ballycastle Centre, including hosting of groups, planning activities, cooking, leading discusions, housekeeping, showing visitors around the centre, drama, reception work, singing, running the tuck shop and much, much more.
Short-Term Volunteer Programme:
Corrymeela recruits nearly 400 Short-Term Volunteer Staff each year. The only difference between Long-Term Volunteer Staff and Short-Term Volunteer Staff is that Long-Term Volunteers live in community and Short-term Volunteers join thiscommunity for smaller specific periods of time. All other possibilities remain the same. They are each vital to the running of the centre. Short-Term Volunteers provide year long weekend and midweek support as well as supporting the Summer Programme. |

Bossey Ecumenical Institute
bg@wcc-coe.org |
Who are the "Blue Angels"?
Have you ever dreamt of becoming an angel? If so, and you are between 18 and 22, come to Bossey as a "Blue Angel"!
It has been the tradition since the foundation of the Ecumenical Institute in 1946 that some of the housework be done by an international group of young women and men volunteers
who are willing to help for periods of three to four months. These volunteers are called the "Blue Angels". They live in single rooms in a separate house, called "Heaven".
Life in Bossey is a community experience, with the chance to meet people from different cultures and countries. By working, living and sharing together, each group of Blue Angels will
have its own specific experience of Bossey. The Ecumenical Institute also tries to offer the volunteers an opportunity of ecumenical learning, so they are encouraged to attend
lectures, outings, and social events during the summer seminars and the Graduate School.
Applicants should be no less than 18 years of age, and not more than 22. The main language spoken in Bossey is English, but it is an advantage to know some French.
The Blue Angels work an average of five days a week (which may include Saturdays, Sundays and holidays), eight hours a day. A monthly schedule is made up for the different duties,
and days off are planned according to the amount of work at the time. Fields of work are the kitchen (washing the dishes and laying the tables), help at the reception, and occasionally
preparing the rooms or help in the garden. The Château de Bossey, located near the village of Céligny, Switzerland, is a place for ecumenical formation. It fulfills its task with
three major programmes: it runs a graduate school, it is a seminar centre, and a centre for visiting groups.
Bossey's mission is to challenge the churches to proclaim together with clarity and conviction the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Prince
of Peace. It will continue to equip ecumenical Christian leaders to live, think, and act as agents of peace and reconciliation. Bossey
is a community reaching beyond boundaries to embrace God's presence in a divided and contentious world, providing innovative
and formative ecumenical studies and experiences. |

United Nations Volunteers
|
The United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) was created by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1970, to
serve as an operational partner in development co-operation at the request of UN member states. It is unique within the UN
family and as an international volunteer undertaking. It reports to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and
works through UNDP's country offices around the world.
Who are the UN Volunteers?
There are about 4000 qualified, experienced and motivated women and men of over 140 nationalities annually serving in
developing countries as volunteer specialists and field workers. Since 1971, roughly 18,000 UNVs from some 150 developing
and industrialised nations 75% and 25% respectively in 1998 have worked in an equal number of countries.
Volunteer Statistics
What do they do?
They work in technical, economic and social fields, under four main headings: in technical co-operation with skills-short
governments; with community-based initiatives for self-reliance; in humanitarian relief and rehabilitation; and in support of
Human Rights, electoral and peace-building processes. They are professionals who work on a peer basis. They listen and
discuss; "teach and train"; encourage and facilitate. Volunteers also share and exchange ideas, skills and experience.
In what sectors do they work?
The UNV programme involves a wide spread of sectors: it maintains a roster covering some 108 professional categories.
Agriculture, health and education feature prominently, as do social conditions, community development, vocational training,
industry, transport and population. As of spring 1998, humanitarian relief and rehabilitation together with electoral and
peace-building work accounted for more than 30 % of assignments.
Important Note: UNV does not offer short-term overseas summer camps, nor training for students, nor assignments to
graduating students with no work experience in their field.

Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary
ServiceShort-term Voluntary Service
This type of service is principally meant for those who have just a limited time available (less than 6
weeks), but who are motivated to work as a volunteer.Short-term activities are varied and can be open to both qualified and non-qualified people.
International Voluntary Workcamps
Workcamps, the main form of short term voluntary service, consist of a group of volunteers working
together on a common project for a period of 2 - 6 weeks. These projects are exchanges, generally
during the summer months, between participating organisations across the globe. Collective work and
community life offer an enriching experience to volunteers who at the same time contribute acitvely to
a project useful to the local community. Generally no particular skill or professional experience is
required to participate in workcamps.
Medium and long-term Voluntary Service
Those devoting more time, between three and twelve months are known as medium term volunteers
(MTV's); those who work for a year or more are long term volunteers (LTV's). Long-term volunteering
generally requires a higher degree of specialization and experience.
United Nations Volunteers
In an international level, the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) offers the possibility to serve for 2
years (renewable once) to specialists who have at least two years of professional experience on their
field of specialisation. These volunteers work in most cases on projects carried out by the different
agencies of UN. |
