It is estimated that there are over 1,000,000 children and youth
are trafficked or forced into the sex trade every year.

Trafficking in people, especially children and youth, for prostitution
and pornography is one of the fastest growing areas of international criminal activity.

One in every 2 young women is sexually abused
before the age of 18.

These web pages are a tribute to the courage of the many children
and youth who have been affected by sexual exploitation
and a call to solidarity and action to you,
the Churches and our communities.

What kind of world do we live in, where millions of children and young people are trafficked into the sex trade, and sexually exploited daily?
WHY? Children and young people are being forced into prostitution and pornography foced to work in horrendeous conditions. WHY? Victims of trafficking, forced prostution and sexual abuse are subject to gross human rights violations including, rape, torture, forced abortions, starvation, and threats of torturing.WHY?

Injustices perpetuated on vulnerable children and youth who are enslaved into prostitution, trafficking and sexual abuse is greatly neglected and “kept in the shadows” by the society, governments, mass media, law enforcement bodies and the Churches.

Since 1997, ENYA has implemented the "Out of the Shadows — Into the Rainbow" spotlight programme, which was developed to address the trafficking, forced prostitution and sexual abuse of children, youth and women primarily in Eastern and Central Europe. The programme has since expanded and now includes interactive training seminars, prevention programmes and strategies for the establishment of independent "Lighthouse" youth homes.

All programmes are co-managed in cooperation with young people living on the streets, Roma/Sinti young people and communities, survivors and youth living in state institutional care. Through our programmes and project we engage the Churches and diaconial related organisations on several levels, in a process of reflection, analysis and community diaconial actions; and to assist in the prevention of trafficking, forced prostitution, sexual abuse in all its forms.

The Ecumenical Network for Youth Action has been involved in developing bridges and partnerships; with and between sexually exploited youth themselves, and the various sectors within our societies. All our programmes are youth centered and youth driven. We are currently networking with other organisations, in order increase the involvement of the Churches, Faith Communities and various sectors in society in these fields. Our aims include to strengthen their/our commitment (or begin!) to the young people by ensuring there are resources available, and to work cohesively rather than in private isolated projects. Join us in this extremely important work.

While surfing through the next pages, we hope the stories and needs of the young people themselves will strongly encourage you to take action and will encourage you to take time to care about those who are most vulnerable in our society ---- by getting involved in a local project, or starting one if none exists, or by supporting those organisations that are child/youth centered who are developing partnerships with sexually exploited young people. Try to learn as much as you can as to the root causes as to why they are exploited and how we can stop the exploitation.

Take action to assist sexually exploited young people.

Get to know us, our names and our stories - listen to us with an open mind.
Assist us by increasing the range of alternatives available to us and enable us to make our own decisions.
Support and provide direct assistance projects which help us.
Create more training and educational programmes > and with us.
Campaign against trafficking, forced prostitution, poverty, child abuse and domestic violence; and advocate for more effective child/youth-centered policies everywhere.
