OVERCOMING VIOLENCE OF YOUNG WOMEN

"Violence against women continues to persist as one of the most heinous, systematic and prevalent human rights abuses in the world. It is a threat to all women, and an obstacle to all our efforts for development, peace, and gender equality in all societies. Violence against women is always a violation of human rights; it is always a crime; and it is always unacceptable. Let us take this issue with the deadly seriousness that it deserves."
Ban Ki moon, United Nations Secretary General

The main aim of this two year programme is to work towards overcoming violence against young women. Four out of six of the planned seminars will be specifically with Roma young people. The seminars will involve both young women and young men in equal numbers.

By working for the prevention and the protection of young women from all forms of violence, through this project we hope to enact and to bring about changes for a safer and just world with them.

According to the World Health Organization, one in four women around the world experiences sexual violence during her lifetime, Up to a third of all women have been physically assaulted by an intimate male partner. Women survivors and victims of violence often under report their experiences because of social stigma, fears about their safety, and lack of appropriate response from institutions meant to protect them. It is estimated that worldwide, one in five women will become a victim of rape or attempted rape in her lifetime.

There will be 5 focus areas, which will be developed through transformation training seminars modules, micro-projects, network development, internships, fact sheets and tool kit publications and campaigns.

Focus Area Modules:

1) Violence Against Women - Reducing Violence against Young Women
2) Violence Against Women - Reducing Violence against women Against Young Roma Women

3) Domestic Violence - Root Causes, Prevention, Protection and Healing
4) Domestic Violence - Tough Guise - Crisis in Masculinities and Violence Towards Women

5) Sexual Violence - HIV Infection and Violence against women

Violence against women is inextricably linked to gender-based inequalities. Violence against women both reflects and reinforces inequities between men and women and compromises the health, dignity, security and autonomy of its victims. It encompasses a wide range of human rights violations, including sexual abuse of women, rape, domestic violence, sexual assault and harassment, trafficking of women and girls and several harmful traditional practices. Violence against women takes many forms but it almost invariably disproportionately affects women, especially in situations of domestic violence and sexual violence.
